Joe Wilson last night made himself instantly notorious by shouting "You lie!" during President Obama's address to a joint session of Congress. He's up for re-election.
Wilson is being challenged by Rob Miller, a retired Marine who served two tours of duty in Iraq. I just made a donation to Miller's campaign and urge you to as well.
Here's Rob Miller in his own words on why he's running for Congress:
I never thought I would run for Congress -- or feel like I had to. I have always thought of myself as a Marine. I started thinking that way not long after my father died when I was 14 years old. Since I enlisted at the age of 20, the Marine Corps has been my extended family and I couldn't imagine that would ever change. But it did after my second tour of duty in Iraq -- where I fought to maintain the peace, but also to enable Iraqis to build better schools, improved hospitals, to help create jobs and, where possible, a stable economy and civil society.
When I returned home to my wife and six year old son, I saw that the politicians in Washington were not fighting for these same things at home. Worse, the congressman who represented the second district where I live -- Rep. Joe Wilson -- was part of that elite circle of George Bush loyalists who chose to enact a radical agenda, never mind the lives and wellbeing of the constituents he was pledged to represent.
Since last night, Rob Miller's campaign has raised over $500,000. You can track his progress toward $1 million here.
Last night Joe Wilson showed a shocking lack of respect for the presidency of the United States. He should now be shown the door.

Interesting sentiment, but do you apply it equally? Back when the democrats were booing at President Bush during his state of the union, did you then make a number of donations to opposing candidates in the hopes of unseating those rude and nasty democrats? If so, then I can appreciate your consistent defense of civil discourse and of respect for the presidency of the United States.

Jason-
Thanks for the comment. No, I never felt compelled to donate any money to any political campaign until the last presidential election. But I would condemn such behavior from either side of the aisle equally.
And for the record, I'm not especially partisan. President Obama is the first Democrat I've ever voted for.
Regards,
Charlie

That's fair. And for the record I'm not making an attempt to defend Wilson's actions. I happen to beleive the president is...let's say being creating with the truth, but I'm not sure that Wilson chose the best forum or method to point that out.
But what has bothered me as much as his actions is the incredible hypocrisy I've seen in the media since it happened. Bush was attacked savagely by many democrats, and they were booing him in that same chamber while he gave a state of the union speech. How quickly that seems to be forgotten.
Apparently now we're supposed to be outraged and before we were not?

Please note, that I believe that the utmost respect should be given to the higher office of the United States no matter what side of the aisle is represented. We teach our children to rebel against authority when this type of behavior is condoned and allowed under the guise of "Freedom of Speech". America is despised in the eyes of other nations because it's citizens are so ruethless against their own figures of authority. What message are we sending to our next generation when these types of outbursts are permissible and allowed to be displayed?
