On Confidence

Several people here have expressed surprise at Henning Kagermann' mea culpas in his keynote this morning for SAP's sins of the past: out-of-control implementations, lack of maturity in his company' early products, and deficit of executive-lvel attention to products in the early 90's. But this is all consistent with something Sig and I were discussing in the taxi on the way to the show this morning: confidence.

I believe that admitting past mistakes, allowing unprecedented access to executives by bloggers, and even simple self-deprecation are all side-effects of the confidence that SAP feels. This all stands in fairly stark contrast to the bombastic attitude and opacity of some other enterprise applications vendors.
